Western Dressage Clinic Sat. Sept. 24th

Breeches & Cowboy Boots?

Sure, why not? Anything is possible when you merge the best of western riding with the training of dressage.

The clinic will focus on riding with softness and lightness in any tack. It will be helpful for all types of riders and horses (trail, reining, cutting, pleasure, huntseat, etc). Lynette Weldon will work with each horse/rider team to understand feel and timing and how to ask your horse for advanced maneuvers correctly. The clinic will help the horses become more responsive and balanced in their movement (which will enhance performance in any discipline).

Join Lynette for a fun filled day of learning and fun!

Saturday Sept. 24th 10:00am- 4:00pm. Email or call the ranch to register 715-273-6070

Just Be

Something happens when you enter the driveway in the shade of tall pines that opens up into lush pastures filled with wildflowers that mark the beginning of the paddocks at Lost Creek Ranch. A subtle shift in attitude. Mother Nature calls and cell phones are ignored. The urge to hurry disapears.

The horses rarely have the urge to hurry. Instead they saunter around checking on their paddock mates hay to see if it tastes better than their own.  They turn their flanks toward the sun, drop their heads and soak up as much warmth as they can. They know winter is coming. They feel it in the shorter days and cooler nights but they don’t hurry. Horses have it figured out. They enjoy the warm sun when they can and do not waste a second worrying about anything else.

They live in the moment.

They can teach us to do the same if we let them. To breath. To feel. To see the colors of the sky and the leaves. To feel the breeze. To hear the creek. To turn off our internal dialouge that tells us what we should be doing, feeling, thinking and instead just BE.

Be ourselves. Be still. Be in the moment. Be aware. Be alive.

It is fall now and the deep blue skies seemed filled with energy and change and optimism. We can take the horses lead and live in the moment. To be present in every moment. That is my goal for fall.

Angels on Earth

Saying Goodbye is never easy. A note from Lynette:

“We just said goodbye to Ava, she went quickly and peacefully, and was ready to cross over to the other side. Blizz was there at her side through it, said goodbye and was at peace the minute she passed. She immediately wanted to go back into her paddock and do her job again taking care of Baby Star. If there are people who are considered angels on earth, our vet Rande is definately one of them. We’ve both agreed this is the worst part of our jobs and cried together,”

Ava and Baby Star came home to the ranch on the same night from the horse auction’s “kill pen” (the pen where the “useless,” “unwanted,” sick, abused or lame horses are sold for slaughter). Ava was struggling to breath and it was decided we would give her a humane end to her life instead of letting her get herded onto the meat truck headed for Mexico.  In the morning when the vet came out Ava was breathing better… so the journey to try to save Ava began. First was getting her breathing under control and second was treating her laminitis. Although nearly everyone advised that Ava’s laminitis was untreatable our amazing farrier Kari Hoyer put a cast on Ava’s foot and by spring Ava was pronounced sound! She enjoyed her days with her paddock mates Blizz and Baby Star eating, playing and napping. As the summer went on though Ava had more and more difficulty breathing and with each attack more scar tissue formed on her lungs. Her quality of life went downhill quickly and she was not a happy horse. Lynette had to make the hard decision to give Ava the humane end she was promised.

Somewhere…somewhere in time’s own space
There must be some sweet pastured place

Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow

Some Paradise where horses go.

For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.

A Busy Summer at Lost Creek Ranch

Where to start with this update? There is so much activity around the ranch this summer from lessons and new leasers (welcome to you all!), horses in for training, new riders from the youngest ones in the Little Buckaroos program to adults who are new to riding or coming back to horses after a long time off and each week we welcome lots of Lost Creek Ranch first timers who are coming out for a trail ride or half day ranch excursian they purchased through Living Social.

The horses are loving all the treats and attention!

Camp Confidence, Lost Creek Ranch’s annual residential horse camp is off to a great start! Lexi is back as Lead Camp Counselor and the kids and parents are loving her! A BIG thank you to Sophie, assistant camp counselor for all her hard work in the hot sun and for at least trying to get the girls to have some quiet time in the middle of the day…

In addition to new riders we have a great group of volunteers who come with a smile on their face ready to make the ranch a better place! Special thanks to Shanice, Carly, MJ, Cari & Jennifer who never fail to rise to the challenge.

Baby Star update: During a recent overnight thunderstorm Baby got scared and tried to run through the fence. She cut her leg and needed stitches. Lisa from Peirce Vet came out and fixed her up and now Baby has to spend 2 weeks on stall rest. After a couple temper tantrums she has settled into her stall and spends her days listening to the radio and looking out her window. Soon she will be running and bucking in her paddock again and resume her training. Before her injury she was working on groundwork and had even been saddled up and lunged! Hopefully she’ll take right to the saddle again when her stitches are healed.

Ava:  Lexi has worked a little bit with Ava and she seems to have no training. She is going to be a project for sure! Her breathing is excellent on most days. She is a real treat for our wonderful farrier, Kari, but she is otherwise happy and healthy and enjoys her grooming sessions from Cari and hanging out with her bff, Blizz.

Hope to see you around the ranch soon!

Show Day

Sunday June 12th was the second Annual Lost Creek Ranch Charity Fun Show and what a perfect day for it! So many nice people and horses came out but one spectator summed it up- this is what she said: “It was such an amazing enviroment and hearing the kids be so supportive of each other- telling each other to do their best and have fun- it brought tears to my eyes because it was unlike any other show I had ever been to! Not only were the riders having fun but so were the horses… they really seemed to enjoy their jobs and it was so neat to witness the partnership between horse and rider.”

Special Thanks to our judge Steve Bobzin, his wife Brandee and friend Colleen for their continued support! Steve is an awesome judge who gives helpful feedback to make us all better riders.

We will be posting pictures soon and if you have photos to share please send to us!

Lynettes students did great at the show- lots of blues and reds!

A BIG thanks to all the volunteers who worked to get ready for the show and worked the day of the show keeping everything on track, handing out ribbons & keeping the riders fed!

Mother/ Daughter Weekend Getaway at Lost Creek Ranch

Lynette,

Brynn, Quinn and I want to thank you again for a lovely weekend.  It was truly perfect.  You have a wonderful ranch and we felt so at home. The riding, grooming and tacking up the horses brought me back to my childhood and reminded me how much I enjoy it.  There was added joy seeing the joy in both my daughter’s eyes.  I attached a few of my favorite pictures from the weekend.

We would love to return in July for an extended stay, hoping for daily riding lessons and ideally the bunk house again!

Can’t wait to return.
Thanks again,
Jennifer

The Quiet Work

This Blog post is to thank all of the volunteers who work quietly behind the scenes at Lost Creek Ranch keeping the horses happy and healthy (and even a little fat).

The unsung heroes who scoop poop, pull burrs out of manes, brush mud out of coats (just to watch the horse head straight to the mud to roll again as soon as he gets back to his paddock), unload and stack hay, fill waters and drag hoses, scrub tanks, fix fences … the list goes on and on!

But the point is that Lost Creek Ranch has the best group of volunteers around!

We work together, ride together, laugh and cry together and some of us have even been known to argue about the right way to do something but at the end of the day the job gets done because we all share a sense of pride in Lost Creek Ranch and the amazing quiet work that Lynette Weldon does with the horses and the riders who come to call Lost Creek Ranch home.

We are busy getting ready to introduce a whole new bunch of people to Lost Creek Ranch. The deal we offered through Living Social was a HUGE success and we have more than 400 new people coming out for a ride this summer! The whole herd is excited and can’t wait to make new friends (especially the ones who come with apples and carrots!).

If you are new to Lost Creek Ranch or horses we invite you to check out all the info on the website about learning to ride, training, working student and volunteer programs, Camp Confidence residential horse camp and our new program for the littlest horse lovers the Little Buckaroom Program! At Lost Creek Ranch there is something for every horse lover and then come on out and meet the herd! Guests are welcome to stop by to watch a lesson and learn more about the programs at Lost Creek Ranch.

Training Spotlight

Several years ago, I found myself gazing into the eyes of an unbroke, 3 year old Mustang mare. Although I had grown up on horses, I was not prepared to train a Mustang myself. I had heard Mustangs were different from other horses and I must admit I was intimidated by the thought. I hired Lynnette Weldon of Lost Creek Ranch to train my Mustang mare. When the training was finished, Lynnette called and asked if I would stop in and take the mare for a ride in her arena. I hesitated, I stalled, I made an excuse…I must admit, I was still intimidated. Oh the Mustang stories I’d heard !

About a week after Lynnette called, I tried to lay my fears aside and I headed out to the Ranch. Lynnette was great at explaining everything she had done with the mare while she demonstrated her training methods and allowed me to try them out myself so I would know in the future how to handle my horse. Lynnette was also great at explaining how the process of training was coming along during the actual training. I called her several times, and she was able to tell me exactly the progress she and my mare were making.
I was still a bit tentative about getting in the saddle, but I did and my Mustang mare handled beautifully ! She was so calm and serene, and she did everything I asked her to do. I was extremely impressed with Lynnette’s ability to work not only with my horse, but also with me throughout the training process.

Although I wasn’t able to keep this mare, she did become the companion of a 15 year old girl who rode her in 4-H shows for several years.

I would highly recommend Lynnette as a horse trainer and I would definitely use her again if needed. Lynnette truly has a gift with both horses and children.
