Meet Ava & Star

Where to start? These mares were going to be sold at auction to meat buyers. The older one, Ava, was in serious trouble- she wasn’t breathing well and the little one, Star, was in pen with the yearlings and not much bigger even though it turns out she is four. Lynette had decided to buy Ava (anyone who knows Lynette would not be surprised that she was drawn to help the worst of the worst). Star was a $30 impulse buy… I think we should call her Lucky Star!

These photos were taken the first morning in their new home. They are currently qaurenteened in the barn with a small turn out so they can get some sun and fresh air. In the first few days Ava’s breathing has gotten better (with the help of medication and fresh air) and both mares are hydrated and eating well.

Ava faces challenges from untreated founder that has caused laminitis. She will most likely need xrays to determine the severity. Her pain seems to have eased with bute (painkiller for horses).

Star is a sweet little girl who is eating up all the attention! She is a survivor who has a sweet, curious disposition. She will be a joy for the kids to work with and get back to health. We can’t wait to see a spunky side of Star when she is feeling better!

All of the activities at Lost Creek Ranch including lessons, camps, clinics, retreats and more help to fund horses in need like Ava & Star. Donations are needed to help get these two girls back to health. It will take time and vet care and farrier care. If you can help please send your donation check to Lost Creek Ranch N5011 490th St, Ellsworth, WI 54011 (*write Emergency Fund in your checks memo) or donate via PayPal (link to donate is part way down the page): Donate

We will keep you posted with the mares progress! Thanks to everyone for your kind words and donations!
